The Rigid Inflatable Boat or RIB is a relatively recent development, but has become a very important design of vessel. They are used for a large variety of purposes (as well as having fun of course).
The onshore teaching will be conducted at SIA's school. The RIB Master course is designed to train a beginner to be a competent operator of a boat and to understand fundamentals such as safety, boat handling, mooring, anchoring, towing and including seamanship topics such as collision regulations.
They can be used to support a larger yacht, as a passenger or crew boat for use from yacht to shore, and they are often used as safety boats as they are fast and very manoeuvrable. A RIB may also be used to tow yachts and other vessels or as a dive boat. The RIB Master should be fully conversant with his or her vessel and who to use it. That is what this course is all about.
The course includes manoeuvring two or three sizes of RIB. There is also some theory, rather more for the ICC options (see below). You’ll lean to handle the boat at slow speed and at higher speeds a well as how to anchor and picking a mooring.
The course is usually 2 days but can be extended to 3 days if you want to get an International Certificate of Competence as well as the standard IYT RIB Master certificate. You also need to have a VHF radio certificate which is another one day course that is mandatory for RIB Master Certification to be authorized.
The International Certificate of Competency (ICC), which is a very widely recognised qualification, asked for by many charter companies especially in Europe. The ICC comes from the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Inland Water Committee (UN ECE IWC) Resolution 40. It demonstrates that you have the basic boating skills required to handle a boat in good conditions and during the hours of daylight.
Although only guaranteed to be accepted in countries that have adopted the relevant UN Resolution, the ICC is a useful document and is widely accepted where proof of competence is required. There is a written test and a practical assessment both of which students must pass.
The ICC is valid for five years and is renewable without further testing.
